Quinta do Boiro sits in the Alenquer wine hills, 45 minutes north of Lisbon, in the middle of one of Portugal's most rewarding and least-crowded corners. Within an hour's drive you have the walled town of Óbidos, the palaces of Mafra and Sintra, the surf beaches of Ericeira, Santa Cruz and Peniche, UNESCO monasteries and Napoleonic forts — and, back at Quinta do Boiro, our own wines. Wine tasting at Quinta do Boiro
Start at home. Alenquer is one of the historic DOC wine areas of the Lisboa region, sheltered from the Atlantic by the Montejunto hills, and its reds, especially Syrah and Touriga Nacional, are among the most awarded in the country. Every wine we pour is grown on the estate's own vineyards and crafted by our winemaker, António Braga. Taste them with us, looking out over the vines they come from.

Our home town tumbles down a hillside above the river, which is why the Portuguese call it the Vila Presépio — the Nativity-scene village. Climb to the castle ruins for the view, visit the Convento de São Francisco, one of the first Franciscan houses in Portugal, and the church of São Pedro, where the Renaissance humanist Damião de Góis is buried.
Best at dusk, when the town lights up on the hillside. Pastry shops, pharmacies and supermarkets are all here too.

In 1810 Wellington's hidden chain of hilltop forts stopped Napoleon's army on its way to Lisbon. The Forte do Alqueidão, one of the largest on the lines, sits on a summit just south of the estate with a 360° view over the whole Oeste; the interpretation centre (CILT) in Sobral de Monte Agraço tells the story, and marked trails link the forts.
Go on a clear morning — on a good day you can see the Tagus and the Atlantic from the ramparts.

A lively market town with a castle, a Gothic church and a famously exuberant carnival — one of the best-known in Portugal, taking over the streets for days each February or March. Try the local pastel de feijão, a sweet bean-and-almond tart.
Visiting at carnival? Book accommodation early — the whole region fills up.

The highest point of the region (666 m) and a protected landscape of pine, oak and limestone. Hike the ridge trails, watch paragliders launch, and visit the Real Fábrica do Gelo, an 18th-century royal ice factory that sent ice down to Lisbon's cafés.
Bring a layer — it is noticeably cooler and windier at the top than in the vineyards.

Walled towns, surf beaches and UNESCO monasteries along the Oeste coast to the north and west.
Bacalhôa Buddha Eden
Around 35 hectares of oriental garden set among vineyards near Bombarral — giant golden Buddhas, pagodas, lakes and hundreds of terracotta warriors. Created in response to the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas, it is one of the largest gardens of its kind in Europe.
A little tourist train loops the garden — handy with small children or on a hot day.

Our nearest Atlantic beach: a long sweep of sand below dramatic cliffs and rock stacks, with surf schools, a cliff-top promenade and seafood restaurants. Ideal for a slow day after a wedding.
The Atlantic is cool and lively even in August — swim where the lifeguards' flags say so.

Portugal's best-loved walled town: whitewashed lanes, bougainvillea, a castle and a full circuit of medieval walls you can walk. Óbidos is a UNESCO Creative City of Literature, with bookshops in a church and a market, and the place to try ginjinha (sour-cherry liqueur) in a chocolate cup. It hosts a chocolate festival, a medieval fair in summer and a Christmas village in December.
Arrive before 10:30 or after 17:00 to have the lanes almost to yourself.

Lourinhã is one of Europe's richest dinosaur-fossil areas, and this open-air museum brings it to life with more than 180 life-size models along woodland trails, plus a working palaeontology lab. The top family outing in the region.
Allow at least half a day; most of the trails are shaded.

A spa town founded by a queen, with a daily open-air fruit market on the Praça da Fruta, a romantic park and a long ceramics tradition — the Bordallo Pinheiro factory shop, with its famous cabbage-leaf plates, is here.
Go in the morning for the market, then combine with Óbidos, ten minutes away.

The Oeste has some of Portugal's most scenic courses. Campo Real is about 15 minutes from the estate; the links-style Praia d'El Rey and Royal Óbidos courses run along the dunes about 40 minutes north.
A good option for company groups — tee times for teams can be arranged in advance.

Where the Óbidos lagoon meets the ocean: calm, shallow water on one side for paddleboarding and kayaking, Atlantic waves on the other. The cliff-top viewpoint is one of the best sunset spots on the coast.
The lagoon side is perfect for children and non-swimmers.

Peniche is a fishing port and one of Europe's surf capitals: Supertubos is a world-class beach break that has hosted world-tour contests, and the Baleal peninsula has gentler waves for lessons. The fortress houses the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom. From the harbour, boats cross to the Berlengas, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of seabirds, sea caves and clear water.
Berlengas boats run roughly spring to autumn, weather permitting, and daily visitor numbers are capped — book ahead.

A UNESCO World Heritage Cistercian abbey and one of the great Gothic buildings of Europe. Inside lie the carved tombs of King Pedro and Inês de Castro, Portugal's most famous love story, placed foot to foot so they would see each other first on the Day of Judgement.
Pair it with Nazaré, 15 minutes away, for a full day.

A fishing town with a wide town beach and, at Praia do Norte, the biggest surfed waves in the world. Take the funicular up to the Sítio for the view, and watch the giants from the lighthouse fort in winter.

Royal palaces, Europe's first surfing reserve and the capital itself.
Mafra National Palace & Tapada
A vast 18th-century palace, basilica and convent, listed by UNESCO in 2019. Its rococo library holds some 36,000 books — famously protected by a colony of bats — and its bell towers house two historic carillons. Next door, the walled Tapada Nacional de Mafra is a former royal hunting park with deer, wild boar and trails on foot or by bike.
The palace is closed on Tuesdays; combine it with lunch in Ericeira.

A white-and-blue fishing village on the cliffs and Europe's first World Surfing Reserve. Surf schools for every level, small beaches in coves, and some of the best seafood on the coast — order whatever came in that morning.

The capital is an easy day trip: Belém's monastery and tower, the alleys of Alfama, the miradouros, the riverfront and the tram. Lisbon's airport is also about 45 minutes away, so many guests fit in a city day on arrival or departure.
Park at the edge of the centre and use the metro — driving in the old town is slow.

A UNESCO cultural landscape of fairy-tale palaces in misty hills: the Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle, the gardens and wells of Quinta da Regaleira and Monserrate. Leave the car below and use the local bus up the hill.
Book timed tickets online and go early — Sintra gets very busy from late morning.

Tagus Estuary & Vila Franca de Xira
The Tagus Estuary is one of Europe's most important wetlands, with flamingos, spoonbills and huge winter flocks of waders. Walk the riverside path at Vila Franca de Xira or visit the EVOA birdwatching centre on the Lezíria, and discover the Ribatejo's horse-riding and campino herdsman traditions.
Bring binoculars; birdlife is richest from autumn to spring.

The nearest Atlantic beach is Santa Cruz, about 30 minutes west. Ericeira is about 35 minutes, the Óbidos Lagoon at Foz do Arelho about 45 minutes (calm water, good for children), and Peniche and Baleal about 45 minutes.

Yes. Lisbon is about 45 minutes away and Sintra about 50 minutes, so both work as day trips. Many guests fit a Lisbon day into their arrival or departure, as the airport is also about 45 minutes from the estate.

A car is by far the easiest way to explore the Oeste and Alenquer region; most places on this page are 15–60 minutes away by road. Taxis, ride-hailing and private drivers also work well for single outings, and for weddings and groups we can help coordinate transport.
