At a glance
Quinta do Boiro sits in Pereiro de Palhacana, just outside Alenquer and three quarters of an hour from Lisbon. Vines on the slopes, cork woods along the ridge, a flock of sheep in the field below. Each apartment has its own entrance and its own quiet, and the grounds are yours to wander.
The estate
An indoor pool under floor-to-ceiling windows, with the Boiro valley filling them, which makes it as good in February as in July. A tennis court. A secret garden behind its wall, an orchard, and the cork woods above the vines, where the shade is deep even in August. The sheep are a fixture, and will come to the fence if you do; the lambs arrive in spring and are usually the first thing children find.
Inside, the house keeps a private library of several hundred volumes — classics, history, nature, wine, and a shelf of children's books. Guests are welcome to lose an afternoon among the shelves, or to carry a volume out to the terrace beneath the bougainvillea. The baroque chapel and the vineyard itself are both yours to walk, and in September the harvest happens around you.
Quinta do Boiro is registered tourist accommodation, Alojamento Local no. 177606/AL.
Where you sleep
One with two bedrooms, two with one. Each has its own entrance, and all are let with breakfast, linen and towels.
Two bedrooms and a long sitting room under old beams, with a kitchenette and a view over the garden. The one families book.
Bedroom, sitting room and bathroom, opening straight onto the garden. On the ground floor, with no stairs.
The same footprint as Syrah, turned to face the vines. On the first floor, up a flight of stairs.
Four ways to stay
The year
In January and February the vines are bare and being pruned, and the indoor pool and the library come into their own. March brings the lambs. By May the vines are in flower and the garden is at its best, and from June to August the evenings run long and everything happens outside, on the terrace and under the bougainvillea.
September is the harvest, and for a good number of guests it is the week worth choosing. October and November are the quietest and the greenest, and the cork woods are at their best for walking. December is the opposite of quiet — it is Christmas party season on the estate, and Alenquer, which calls itself the Nativity Village, is worth the short drive.

It is the easiest way, but not the only one — Uber and taxis both serve Alenquer and will bring you from Lisbon or the airport. The estate is in the countryside, though, and almost everything worth seeing nearby — Óbidos, the beaches, the Serra de Montejunto — is a short drive.
