At a glance

A Working Wine Estate in Alenquer

Quinta do Boiro sits in Pereiro de Palhacana, just outside Alenquer and three quarters of an hour from Lisbon. Vines on the slopes, cork woods along the ridge, a flock of sheep in the field below. Each apartment has its own entrance and its own quiet, and the grounds are yours to wander.

The estate

What There Is, Beyond the Room

An indoor pool under floor-to-ceiling windows, with the Boiro valley filling them, which makes it as good in February as in July. A tennis court. A secret garden behind its wall, an orchard, and the cork woods above the vines, where the shade is deep even in August. The sheep are a fixture, and will come to the fence if you do; the lambs arrive in spring and are usually the first thing children find.

Inside, the house keeps a private library of several hundred volumes — classics, history, nature, wine, and a shelf of children's books. Guests are welcome to lose an afternoon among the shelves, or to carry a volume out to the terrace beneath the bougainvillea. The baroque chapel and the vineyard itself are both yours to walk, and in September the harvest happens around you.

Four ways to stay

Who Comes, and Why

01

A Weekend in the Country, Forty-Five Minutes from Lisbon

Leave the city on Friday evening and be on the terrace with a glass before the light goes. Alenquer in the morning, the Serra de Montejunto in the afternoon, and the quiet that comes with being properly out of town. Close enough to do often.

02

A Week on the Estate, with Lisbon and Sintra Within Reach

Unpack once. Lisbon, Sintra, Mafra and Ericeira lie thirty to fifty minutes away, and Óbidos, the Silver Coast beaches and Nazaré sit inside the hour. Spend the day out and come back to the pool, the vines and dinner on the terrace.

03

Coming with Children

T2 Arinto has two bedrooms and a kitchenette, which is why it is the one families usually take. Children up to twelve stay free and cots are included. There is the indoor pool, the tennis court, the orchard and the lambs in spring, with Dino Parque and Santa Cruz beach both inside the hour.

04

Coming Back After a Wedding

Many of our guests first saw the estate full of people, with a tent in the vines and the music going. It is a different place on a Tuesday in November. If you were at a celebration here and would like to come back and see it quiet, you would be very welcome.

The year

It Is Not the Same Place in Every Month

In January and February the vines are bare and being pruned, and the indoor pool and the library come into their own. March brings the lambs. By May the vines are in flower and the garden is at its best, and from June to August the evenings run long and everything happens outside, on the terrace and under the bougainvillea.

September is the harvest, and for a good number of guests it is the week worth choosing. October and November are the quietest and the greenest, and the cork woods are at their best for walking. December is the opposite of quiet — it is Christmas party season on the estate, and Alenquer, which calls itself the Nativity Village, is worth the short drive.
